Hale Conservation Park
A rugged little park just south of Williamstown with a 4 km circuit past rocky lookouts, a seasonal waterfall and old mica diggings.
Hale Conservation Park packs a remarkable amount into a small footprint. From the car park on Warren Road, 2.5 kilometres south of Williamstown, a four-kilometre circuit climbs steep rocky ridges to wide views over the South Para valley, then drops into a gully where a creek runs and - after good rain - a small waterfall flows. Allow about two hours.
Along the way the trail passes the old mica diggings, a small historical dig site where shimmering mica and quartz still catch the light in the spoil. The park protects some of the district's most pristine native vegetation, including the uncommon Oyster Bay cypress pine, and quiet walkers often hear - sometimes see - echidnas snuffling through the leaf litter.
It's the best short, hard walk in the southern Barossa. Cool off afterwards at nearby Warren Reservoir, or browse more routes in our walking and hiking collection.
